Modelling the Golomb Ruler

چکیده
The Golomb ruler problem has been proposed as a challenging constraint satisfaction problem. We consider a large number of di erent models of this problem, both binary and non-binary. The problem can be modelled using quaternary constraints, but in practice using a set of auxiliary variables and ternary constraints gives better results. A binary encoding of the problem gives a smaller search tree, but is impractical because it takes far longer to run. We compare variable ordering heuristics and consider the use of implied constraints to improve propagation. We believe that more case studies such as this are essential to reduce the skill currently required for successful modelling.

متن کاملUsing Auxiliary Variables and Implied Constraints to Model Non-Binary Problems
We perform an extensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the use of auxiliary variables and implied constraints in modelling a class of non-binary constraint satisfaction problems called problems of distance. This class of problems include 1-d, 2-d and circular Golomb rulers. We identify a large number of different models, both binary and non-binary, and compare theoretically the level of ...

متن کاملOn the Design of Optimum Order 2 Golomb Ruler
A Golomb ruler with M marks can be defined as a set {ai} of integers so that all differences δij = aj − ai, i 6= j, are distinct. An order 2 Golomb ruler is a Golomb ruler such that all differences δijk` = |δk` − δij |, {i, j} 6 = {k, `}, are distinct as much as possible. Contruction of optimum order 2 Golomb ruler, i.e., of rulers of minimum length, is a highly combinatorial problem which has ...
متن کاملEvolving Golomb Rulers
A Golomb Ruler is defined as a ruler that has marks unevenly spaced at integer locations in such a way that the distance between any two marks is unique. Unlike usual rulers, they have the ability to measure more discrete measures than the number of marks they possess. Although the definition of a Golomb Ruler does not place any restriction on the length of the ruler, researchers are usually in...
